Overview of Course Structure and Time
Overview
This course is divided into 30 1-Hour Lessons. Each topic is made up of timed sections and requires students to spend the allotted amount of time on each page before they can move forward.

Iowa Time Requirements
4 Hours concerning substance abuse and distracted driving: Lessons 4 – 7, 1 hour each 20 Minutes of instruction concerning railroad crossing safety: Lesson 18, Topics 9-13, 33 minutes

2. The Science of Driving and Organ Donation in Iowa • Topics 7-11 of this lesson describe how organ donation works, and include information about family involvement, brain death, recipients, etc.
• Topics 2-6 contain physical science content to inform operation of motor vehicles to maximize safety
3. Mental and Physical Wellness Identify and understand road signs, traffic signals, and pavement markings
4. Alcohol & Drugs #1: Introduction and Physiological Effects These four one-hour lessons include instruction concerning substance abuse, including BAC and the physiology of alcohol consumption, prescription drug and controlled substances use, effects on the driving task, Iowa laws and consequences, statistics and accounts, and more.

8. Know your Vehicle: Adjustments, Dashboard, and Gauges • Topics 1-10 include routine maintenance, including oil changes, in response to dash warning lights
• Driver cabin adjustments in topics 1-4 promote operation of motor vehicles to maximize safety
9. Know Your Vehicle: Steering Column, Lights and Brakes In this lesson, instruction in properly using the vehicle controls encourage operation of motor vehicles to maximize safety:
• Topic 2 (hand position)
• Topic 5 (lighting system)
• Topic 6 (directionals)
• Topic 7 (parking and pedals)
• Topic 8 (brake system)
10. Know Your Vehicle: Construction and Maintenance Routine maintenance: topic 10 gives an overview of systems maintenance.
11. Start to Drive Instruction in operation of motor vehicles to maximize safety is provided, including using a space management system, foot control, stops, response to traffic control devices, and more.

18. Rural Driving and Railroad Safety • Topics 9 through 13 of this lesson provide approximately 33 minutes of instruction in railroad crossing safety, including descriptions of controlled and uncontrolled grade crossings, statistics and accounts, strategies for safety, related signs, and more.

25. Sharing the Road: Part 2 This lesson contains content on sharing the road safely with pedestrians, bicycles, motorcycles, and other vulnerable roadway users.
26. Dangers of Teen Driving and Speeding
27. Distracted Driving This lesson includes one hour of required content on distracted driving, including physical and cognitive distractions and particular attention to wireless devices.
28. Vehicle Emergencies This lesson includes instruction about routine maintenance for tires (topic 2) and brakes (topic 5) and for prevention of tire and exhaust system problems (topic 8).
29. Road Trips and Seat Belt Safety Operation of motor vehicles to maximize energy efficiency is promoted in topic 1.
